Hospital medicine is the discipline of treating hospitalized patients facing acute conditions and disorders. Generally, practitioners of hospital medicine (or hospitalists) are internists with broad expertise. They work in-house on several units providing varying types of care. Though they are capable of treating patients like any other doctor, they often provide stabilizing care from hospital admittance to discharge and refer patients to specialists for more long-term treatment. In addition to their patient care, they may engage in research and teaching.
