Dermatopathology is a subspecialty of dermatology and pathology. Its primary focus is the study of skin diseases at the molecular and microscopic level. Most skin conditions can be diagnosed based on symptoms that are easily recognizable; for those that are not, a biopsy may be a necessary procedure for diagnosis. Dermatopathologists perform these biopsies, then carefully inspect the samples for abnormalities and perform additional tests on the samples. Results of these biopsies and other tests help doctors make a diagnosis and treatment plan for their patient.
